What is the function of a diff-lock ? - 18 July 2007
The two output gears of the differential are locked together via a dog clutch
100% total torque transferred to wheel with traction
Has to be disengaged under normal driving conditions
Driver activated
Diff-locks require the vehicle to be stationary before they can be activated
The J97 P/T and M/U diff-locks are engaged pneumatically
Advantages : Good off road performance by transferring 100% torque to the wheel with traction
Simple and reliable locking mechanism
Standard oils are used
No maintenance required
Is activated on request (tyre wear is reduced)
Disadvantages:Mechanically insensitive users can damage the axle when driving with engaged diff-lock on a hard surface
Vehicle wants to drive straight when the diff-lock is engaged, driver skill is required to negotiate tight corners on loose surfaces
Higher cost than multiplate LSD
What is a Limited Slip Differential ? - 18 July 2007
LSDs make use of preloaded clutch plates
Open differential operation around corners
When a wheel loses traction, a percentage of the total torque is transferred to the non-slipping wheel
Permanently active
Advantages :
Works automatically
Foolproof
High performance image
Relatively Inexpensive
Improved vehicle traction and handling
Adds straight-line stability (yaw damping)
Wide range of torque bias ratios possible to meet specific performance needs
Disadvantages:
Not very capable off road – only a percentage of total torque available at wheel with traction
Overheats easily if abused off road
Special oil is required
Very sensitive to moisture in the oil (results in noise)
Interferes with steering feel
Affects directional stability and steering due to initial “locked” condition
Cannot be disengaged which results in higher tyre wear
A LSD is a serviceable part and may need to be replaced over time
